The Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha has taken an innovative step to protect drivers from the intense sunlight and extreme heat currently prevailing in the Jaffna Peninsula.
Accordingly, the council has begun installing temporary sheds above traffic signal lights at key intersections in Jaffna city.
When red signals are on, drivers are often required to wait for extended periods under the scorching sun until the light turns green. The Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha launched this initiative after observing that motorists particularly those traveling by motorcycles, three-wheelers, and bicycles face significant discomfort in such conditions.
These sheds, constructed using polythene sheets and sacks, provide shade and allow drivers to wait more comfortably until the signal changes. As temperatures in Jaffna continue to rise, the council has also taken steps to expand the number of these protective covers in the future.
The project was initiated with the approval of the council following a proposal submitted by local residents. Several volunteer youth groups in the area have also contributed to its implementation.
