SC finds blatant FR violations by the Sri Lanka’s former President and top officials

A seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya found that Former President Maithripala Sirisena, Former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, Former. National Intelligence Director, Former. IGP & Former. The SIS Director violated the fundamental rights of petitioners by failing to take action to prevent the Easter Sunday attack despite receiving sufficient intelligence information.

The court subsequently ordered Former. President Maithripala Sirisena to pay Rs.100 million to petitioners from his private funds.

Rs.75mn each by Former. IGP Pujith Jayasundara and Former SIS Director Nilantha Jayawardena, Rs. 50 million from former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and  Rs. 10 million from National Intelligence Director Sisira Mendis.
