Sajith Premadasa Alleges the Appointment of Deshabandu Thennakoon as IGP is Unconstitutional

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa took to social media to express grave concerns regarding the appointment process of Deshabandu Thennakoon as the Inspector General of Police, asserting that the Legislative Council did not approve the appointment.

Premadasa highlighted that during the polling for the appointment, the nominee received only 4 votes in favor, 2 votes against, and 2 abstentions. He emphasized that according to constitutional requirements, a minimum of 5 out of 9 votes is necessary for approval, with the Speaker’s vote only applicable in the event of a tie.

In light of the outcome, Premadasa raised serious objections, stating that it is unconstitutional for the Speaker to intervene in the appointment process when there is insufficient support. He condemned the violation of the constitution for the second time, labeling it as a blatant disregard for democratic principles.
