The report on the demolition of the archaeological site in Kurunegala was handed over to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees premises today (22) by the five-member expert committee appointed.

The report contains five recommendations and calls for the immediate conservation of the site. The report stated that since only the roof and windows in front of the building were damaged, it could be preserved.

According to the committee, the rear of the building, which was completely destroyed, could be restored as the Archaeological Department detailed the plans for its preservation. The report also stated that in order to expedite the conservation of this building with archaeological value, it should be taken over by the Department of Archaeology. The committee also proposed for the Road Development Authority to amend its proposed expansion plan at the site.

The committee had further proposed legal action to be taken against all those responsible for the demolition of the building and that the institutions or individuals responsible for it should be charged for the cost of conservation of the site.
