The Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis has issued an order for the release of the individual who impersonated as “Vishwa Buddha” from Ratnapura. The suspect, who faced charges for insulting Buddhism and behaving inappropriately, will be released on two sureties of 5 lakh rupees each.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for the complaint on March 27th. The arrest took place on December 12th, and the suspect was presented in court on December 13th. However, the magistrate ruled that charges under the Convention on Civil and Political Rights could not be maintained against the suspect.
Nevertheless, Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis highlighted that the Criminal Investigation Department has the authority to continue the investigation under Section 290 of the Penal Code. Further developments in this case are anticipated as investigations progress.
