The reduction of one third of the public servants will not affect for any function of the governance mechanism Ministry of Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Secretary M. P. K Mayadunne said. The secretary further pointed out that there are number of public servants without specific specific job description
and it is problematic to continue to maintain them.
Yesterday (24) participating in a special television program, the secretary answered a question about the presence of redundant employees in the public service and said:
“There are cases where the formal recruitment system has been changed in principle. Although there were no specific positions ot vacancies, if there are unemployed graduates, they have been recruited to the public service.
“That way, in some corporations and boards, these staffs have been hired from time to time by certain authorities regardless of the number of them.”
With the exception of labors and office assistants all of other public sector vacancies should be filled with selecting persons after competitive examination he fiuther added.
“We spend billions of public exchequer on government salaries per year. Surely we all know the inefficiency of public service. You can see there are people who just sit there and get paid. The reason for that is that there are a number of recruits in the government service without a specific position. As a whole, even if the public service is reduced by a third, it is not impossible for this public service to maintain the public service.” Mr mayadunne further said.
