The new Minister of Prisons and Prison Reforms Dr. Sudharishini Fernandopulle yesterday (26) led a discussion into the possibility of releasing female prisoners who are imprisoned during their pregnancy or have newborns or children under the age of 5.
Officials from the Ministry of Justice, the Bureau of Children’s Affairs, the Department of Children and Probation, UNICEF, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Department of Prisons participated in this event.
The Minister said she intends to discuss this matter further with the Hon. Minister of Justice in the future.
