The Mahara prison registry, several prison cells, the office of the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of the Prison has been destroyed by the fire started by the inmates yesterday.
This was confirmed by Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana during the press conference held today (30).
The incident has left eight prisoners dead and almost 50 others injured. One prison official is also injured and in critical condition. Officials have taken steps to transfer the remand prisoners of the Prison to Welikada.
