Police attempted to halt a tipper truck loaded with sand illegally sourced from Jaffna’s Putur area today morning (07). Despite police orders to stop, the driver and helper attempted to flee, prompting law enforcement to open fire on the vehicle.
Although gunfire punctured the tipper’s tires, the driver and helper managed to escape into the nearby forest. However, police successfully apprehended two fugitive suspects and another individual involved in sand digging in Chhatuveli.
The three suspects are set to appear before the Mallakam court as the investigation progresses. Acting on a tip-off, a team of officers discovered the unauthorized sand-laden tipper in the Pudur area.
When signaled to stop on a sandy forest road, the driver veered the tipper towards the police officers before fleeing the scene, prompting police to open fire.
Investigations are underway regarding the incident.
