Police have launched an internal investigation against the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Sapugaskanda Police for the alleged failure to properly enforce the law in connection with a traffic accident involving former Speaker and Parliamentarian Ashoka Ranwala, police said.
Police stated that the investigation will examine whether legal procedures were correctly followed during the handling of the case.
The accident occurred last Thursday (18) near the Thenimulla junction in Sapugaskanda, when a jeep driven by the MP collided with the rear of a motorcycle and then crashed into an oncoming car.
A six-month-old baby boy and two women were injured when the jeep collided with the car.
Ashoka Ranwala was initially charged with drunk driving but was later acquitted of the charge. However, police said that suspicious circumstances arose during the investigation process.
Subsequently, the Parliamentarian was arrested on charges of failing to prevent a traffic accident, reckless driving, and causing a traffic accident. He was later produced before court and released on bail.
