A police investigation has been launched into a convoy of vehicles that drove along the Hanwella 219 bus route in the Meegoda Police Division on Sunday evening (Jan. 2), obstructing traffic, *Mawbima* Newspaper reports.

A *Mawbima* journalist who witnessed the unusual vehicle convoy in Hanwella last Sunday evening recorded and posted a video of it on his Facebook account. However, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in charge of Road Safety and Traffic, Indika Hapugoda, claimed that the video, released by the journalist, was four years old. *Mawbima* refuted this statement, asserting that the footage was recorded on Sunday.

The police have since launched an investigation to determine who was responsible for the convoy. The video shows the vehicles passing with loud honking and bright headlights, obstructing oncoming traffic.

The convoy reportedly continued along the Hanwella 219 bus route in the Meegoda Police Division at around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, using loud sirens and horns.

After the journalist posted the video on Facebook, it quickly spread across social media, sparking public concern. Many social media users questioned who was behind the convoy, especially given state policies discouraging VIP vehicle processions.

Meanwhile, journalists raised the issue during a press conference held by the Police Traffic Division on Jan. 3 to discuss Independence Day preparations. When asked about the video, DIG Indika Hapugoda insisted that it was old footage and stated that such incidents no longer occur in the country.
