The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has launched a dragnet across Weliweriya to nab an Inspector of Police (IP) attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) believed to be the mastermind behind the recently unveiled Police drug smuggling ring.

According to the CID officials they have received information that the IP has nearly 25kg of Heroin in his possession. Sources from the Police said it was the same IP who had provided the tip-off connected to the haul of 226 Kg of Heroin discovered while being transported in a lorry in the Wattala, Mabola area.

Sources also said it was the first such successful raid carried out by the Officer though he had been attached to the PNB for nearly 10 years. A resident of Weliweriya, he is now believed to be on the run.
