Law enforcement authorities arrested 22 student activists who participated in a protest organized by the Inter-University Students’ Union, today (10). The demonstration was centered around the demand for unity in advocating for free education and opposing proposed changes by the government within the education sector.
As the protestors marched from Purahala towards Viharamahadevi Park near Viharamaha Devi Park, the police employed water cannons to disperse the demonstration. A subsequent water attack occurred in the Kirulapana area.
Legal proceedings had already been set in motion in relation to the protest, with both the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court and the Fort Magistrate’s Court issuing orders to impose certain restrictions on the event planned for today (10) in Colombo.
