Police denies SSP’s daughter given preferential treatment

The Police have denied that it gave any preferential treatment to the 19 year old daughter of a top cop involved in an accident recently. The 19-year-old suspect, Ratnayaka Mudiyanselage Reshani Maleesha Ratnayaka was released on police bail of Rs.10,000 on Monday (16).

The suspect was charged with negligent driving, failing to avoid an accident as well as driving without a valid licence.

According to Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana, the suspect had committed a bailable offence and was therefore granted bail according to relevant legal provisions. He also noted that a circular had been issued a week before to OICs asking them to grant bail to those who commit bailable offences to avoid overcrowding in the prisons due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

He also noted that the accident did not involve any fatalities and had only caused property damage. “However the Police does not take this incident lightly as the accident occured in a public place and she had driven without a valid license. Neither have we given her any preferential treatment” he said adding that necessary legal action will be taken against her. The DIG made these comments while attending an interview in a private television channel recently.
