Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said that he has appointed a committee headed by former Minister Ruwan Wijewardene to look into the activities of Galle Face Gotagogama. The Prime Minister made this statement while issuing a special statement on the economic situation in the country this afternoon.

The PM said that he would take steps to protect Gota Gogama and hand over full control of the area to the youth community there. According to the Prime Minister, the committee also includes members of the Urban Development Authority, the Ministry of Health, the Police and the Army.

“I had discussions with ambassadors and other delegates from a number of friendly countries yesterday and today. The response has been good. But we have to inform those countries of our current situation, discuss further and enter into relevant agreements.

Working with countries like India has already begun. So I think it will take two or three months to complete this work. Then the medium and long term future is likely to turn out well.
So we have started those discussions especially with the International Monetary Fund. But as we are now, we will have difficulties in the next few weeks.
