Isuru Madushan Thilakaratne, a third-year medical student at the University of Peradeniya, has tragically passed away after drowning in the Mahaweli Ganga while returning to the university from Galpotta on the 23rd of last month.

The victim, a resident of Katugastota, was among a group of approximately 45 students who had completed their clinical training and decided to take a bath at Galpotta, a renowned area along the Mahaweli River.

During their swim, four students, including Isuru Madushan Thilakaratne, encountered difficulties, with three being rescued after considerable effort. Sadly, Isuru remained submerged for about 20 minutes before being brought ashore.

He was rushed to Nawalapitiya Hospital, where he received basic treatment before being admitted. Despite efforts to save him, Isuru remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit for 11 days before succumbing to his injuries.
