Led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the opposition alleges that Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena’s actions, particularly during the voting process to elect the Inspector General of Police and his handling of the Online Security Act, have been unconstitutional.

The opposition asserts that the Speaker’s conduct constitutes a continuous violation of the constitution and warns of potential national and international consequences resulting from his actions in facilitating government ordinances.

Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella stated that following the submission of the motion of no confidence, it is expected to be forwarded to the Committee on Parliamentary Affairs for further consideration.
