President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated yesterday (26) that only he can implement the country’s laws equally, and he is determined to do so.
Speaking at the Bhikku Conference, the President questioned why some people are “fighting like crazy” when the law is said to be applied fairly to everyone. He pointed out that those who oppose this change do so because, in their conscience, they know they are criminals and fraudsters.
A large number of monks participated in the conference.
The President further said:
“I believe this is our opportunity. But there is a group that fears this new transformation and is not ready for it. Why are they resisting when the law is applied equally? It is because their conscience tells them they are guilty. Therefore, the principle that everyone is equal before the law should be embraced.
In the past, it was common to return bad for bad. But now, we must respond to the bad with good. Everything we have inherited is tainted, and our duty is to transform it into something better. For this, we need courage, faith, and perseverance—and I believe we have those qualities.
Everyone should be equal before the law. We are building such a culture. Wealth, power, positions, history, or even monarch-like authority—none of these matters. Everyone is equal before the law.
If anyone in this country has been involved in crime, corruption, misuse of power, or squandering public wealth, we will take every effort to bring that person to justice. This is not about revenge or hunting individuals. It is about restoring society’s faith in law, justice, and fairness.”
