Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the National People’s Power (NPP), has filed a complaint against MP Thissa Attanayake of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) for defaming her. She claims that Thissa Attanayake falsely said the NPP would stop the Kandy Esala Perahera if they came to power. The case was filed in the Colombo District Court today.
Attorney-at-Law Shanika Silva submitted the complaint on behalf of Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. In her complaint, Dr. Harini said that during a political meeting in Mawanella on August 18, Thissa Attanayake made a statement that an NPP government would stop the historic Sri Dalada Perahera in Kandy. She also claimed that this statement was hate speech.
Dr. Harini argues that this false and insulting statement has damaged her image and reputation as a politician.
In her petition, she is seeking compensation of 1 billion rupees from Thissa Attanayake and a well-known TV company, which was also named in the complaint, for the harm caused.
