Vehicles import restrictions may prevail till the end of the next year 2022 Finance Ministry sources said.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Finance told Lankasara that it has been decided to implement vehicle import restrictions throughout the coming year as well. The spokesman added that instructions had been given.
Attention has been drawn to the fact that no provision will be made in the budget 2022 for the importation of vehicles even for the government institutions, the spokesman added:
Sri Lanka spends approximately Rs. 24 billion annually on vehicle imports and has spent about Rs. 1.2 trillion on vehicle imports between 2015 and 2019.
Approximately 500,000 to 600,000 vehicles are imported to Sri Lanka, with highest number of vehicles being imported between 2015 and 2019 in 2015. The figure was 647,000 vehicles in 2015.
