In response to public complaints regarding justice operations and concerns about the protection of human rights, the National Police Commission has emphasized three key points to the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The Commission aims to address these issues and ensure that law enforcement activities align with constitutional principles and legal frameworks.
The three points highlighted by the National Police Commission are as follows: Activities should be carried out in a manner that upholds the basic human rights protected by the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, all activities must be performed within the existing legal framework of the country, following the procedures prescribed by law and strict disciplinary measures should be taken against officials who are proven to have acted against the law.
The National Police Commission has communicated these directives to the Inspector General of Police, urging him to inform all police officers about the guidelines. This notification comes after a thorough examination by the National Police Commission, which focused on the control of the drug menace and the organized “Yukthiya” operation, taking into account public complaints directed to the Commission.
The Inspector General of Police is expected to update the National Police Commission on the steps taken to ensure compliance with the provided instructions.
