At the invitation of the President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will Visit Sri Lanka from April 4 to April 6, 2025. This visit is a significant step in deepening the long-standing ties between the two nations and further strengthening their multi-faceted partnership.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka follows his participation in the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, where he engaged in discussions with regional leaders on fostering cooperation and development. His visit to Sri Lanka will mark a continuation of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and its vision for regional prosperity.
During his stay, Prime Minister Modi will hold discussions with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to review the progress of key areas of bilateral cooperation outlined in the Joint Vision for “Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future.” The discussions will focus on trade, investment, security, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges, ensuring a roadmap for future collaboration.
Apart from high-level meetings with senior Sri Lankan dignitaries and political leaders, the Prime Minister will visit the historic city of Anuradhapura. During this visit, he will inaugurate several development projects implemented with Indian financial assistance. These projects aim to boost infrastructure, economic development, and people-to-people ties, reinforcing India’s commitment to Sri Lanka’s progress.
Prime Minister Modi’s last visit to Sri Lanka was in 2019, and since then, both nations have continued to enhance their cooperation through diplomatic and economic engagements. Earlier, President Dissanayake chose India for his first foreign visit after assuming office, underlining the importance of bilateral relations.
India and Sri Lanka share a deep-rooted cultural and historical bond that spans centuries. This upcoming visit is expected to lend further momentum to strategic collaboration and reaffirm India’s role as a key development partner for Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka, along with his participation in the BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand, underscores India’s commitment to regional integration and cooperation through its ‘Act East’ policy, the ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), and the Indo-Pacific strategy.
