Namal Rajapaksa has asserted that he is not reluctant to critique any government’s decisions, emphasizing the importance of learning from past mistakes. He cited the negative repercussions of silent acceptance of flawed decisions, such as the use of organic fertilizers during the tenure of the Gotabhaya Rajapaksa government, as contributing to the present challenges in the country.
In response to the ongoing tax debate, he argued that if the country faces financial difficulties due to tax concessions, the responsibility should be shared by those, including Sajaba and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, who unanimously supported such decisions in parliament without opposition.
Regarding tax reduction promises made by the Gotabhaya Rajapaksa government in its 2019 manifesto, Namal Rajapaksa questioned the characterization of tax cuts as a mistake when it aligns with the electoral mandate. He concluded by assigning responsibility for any financial distress to the leaders of the previous good governance government and members of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna who endorsed it.
