Among the cabinet ministers sworn in today, Namal Karunaratne, a seasoned politician and farmer leader who received a record number of preferential votes from the Kurunegala district, was notably absent.
Karunaratne, who previously served as a Member of Parliament in the 2004 coalition government, secured 356,969 preferential votes in this election. As the leader of the Kurunegala National People’s Power (NPP) group, he achieved the highest number of votes in the district.
According to internal sources within the NPP, the party has emphasized the sacrifices made by its leaders to make critical political decisions for the nation. Karunaratne is reportedly committed to taking a leading role in implementing state policies.
