Minister Asserts New Electricity Act to Stand Firm Despite Protest from Workers

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera made a statement today (19) saying that the newly proposed Electricity Act will not be retracted, even if confronted with legal challenges from all twenty-four thousand electricity workers.

Speaking at a special press conference held at the Ministry of Power and Energy in Colombo 7, the Minister emphasized that an increase in legal action would only serve to refine the bill further.

Furthermore, Wijesekera announced that the new electricity bill is slated for presentation to parliament as soon as its convening. Addressing concerns about its legality, he outlined a provision allowing individuals to challenge any constitutional or illegal aspects within 14 days of its presentation. These challenges, he specified, will be adjudicated by the Supreme Court, with recommendations forwarded to the Speaker.

Responding to criticism that the new act politicizes the power sector, Wijesekera dismissed detractors as “saboteurs.” He revealed that only a handful of individuals, including former President Maithripala Sirisena and former minister Wimal Weerawansa, had submitted proposals for the bill, suggesting minimal opposition within political circles.

Highlighting the shortcomings of the existing Electricity Act of 2009, the Minister argued that it is more susceptible to political influence compared to the proposed legislation. With steadfast determination, Wijesekera affirmed his commitment to implementing the new Electricity Act, despite anticipated legal hurdles.
