Maithripala leads election law violations count

Former President Maithripala Sirisena out of 7452 candidates contesting in the upcoming elections has managed to become the candidate who has committed the most election law violations up to date. 

While Sirisena is contesting under the banner of the Sri Lanka Podhujana Peramuna (SLPP) in the Polonnaruwa district, up to June 22, 2020, he has violated election laws thrice it has been reported to the Election Commission. 

It was reported that he had attempted to distribute certificates and prizes to graduates of the Polonnaruwa districts last week, while he had also summoned retired government servants to the Polonnaruwa Araliya Hotel for a feast. However, both events were stopped by officials of the Elections Commission. 

Meanwhile, a large number of his election posters, banners and cutouts put up violating election laws were also taken down by the Police.

Commenting on this. Maithripala Sirisena has said he regrets the meddling by the EC officials. 

However, according to election laws treating by a candidate is a violation and EC officials had taken steps to put a stop to the events organized by Sirisena.
