The police have revealed that the international school student who tragically died yesterday (October 7) after jumping from the observation deck of Colombo’s Lotus Tower was a close friend of the two students who committed suicide on July 2 by jumping from the 67th floor of the Altair Tower in Colombo.
According to Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Talduwa, the preliminary investigation showed that the girl was deeply affected by the deaths of her friends.
All three students attended Colombo International School. Investigations also revealed that the girl, who committed suicide about three months after her friends, entered the Lotus Tower alone and jumped from the observation deck.
The police identified the victim as 15-year-old Radhya Gunasekara, a grade 11 student from a business family in Kollupitiya. On the day of the incident, she had left school in Kurunduwatta, changed out of her uniform, and headed to the Lotus Tower.
Her school bag, containing her uniform, was found on the viewing deck of the tower, along with a mobile phone believed to be hers. The police say that Radhya purchased a ticket to the Lotus Tower, went to the 29th floor, removed her shoes, and jumped between 3:30 and 4:00 pm. She chose a secluded area to avoid security and other visitors on the observation floor.
Security camera footage showed her arriving at the tower, heading to the upper floor, and walking around the observation deck before jumping. Police are continuing their investigation and gathering more details on the case.
