Legal Officers Union Comes Forward To Defend Attorney General

The Legal Officers’ Association of the Attorney General’s Department has strongly defended the Attorney General and the officials involved in a recent decision to discharge three suspects in a case. The Association emphasized that the Attorney General exercised independent professional judgment following the department’s long-standing traditions.

In a statement issued yesterday, Tashya Gajanayake, Acting Secretary of the Association, expressed concern over factually incorrect and misleading media reports regarding the Attorney General’s advice dated January 27, 2025. The statement clarified that all established procedures and practices within the Attorney General’s Department were strictly followed in reaching the decision.

According to the Association, the officials carefully reviewed all relevant material and legal provisions before making recommendations. After thorough consideration, the Attorney General agreed with these recommendations before issuing the final advice to discharge the suspects.

The Association underscored that making decisions about indictments and suspect discharges based solely on available evidence—without political influence or concern for public opinion—is a fundamental principle of an independent Attorney General’s Department.

Reaffirming their trust in the Attorney General and the legal officers who participated in the decision-making process, the Association asserted that they acted with integrity and professionalism. The statement further stressed that the Legal Officers’ Association would strongly oppose any attempt to remove the Attorney General from office.
