A fundamental rights petition has been filed before the Supreme Court, requesting a full investigation into the compensation received by former Pohottuwa MPs and Ministers for damages to their houses during the “Aragalaya” protests.
This petition was filed by leading environmental lawyer Dr. Ravindranath Dabare. The petitioner also requests the Supreme Court to order the return of any compensation obtained through false claims.
According to legal expert Prathibha Mahanama, the MPs and Ministers received compensation under the Disaster Management Act. The maximum compensation for a completely destroyed house under this Act is Rs. 2.5 million. However, reports indicate that former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella alone received Rs. 95.9 million for his house, which was destroyed by fire on May 9, 2022.
