King Charles III has released a recorded message and a favorite photograph of Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate the first anniversary of her death.
In the message, King Charles recalled the late Queen’s devoted service and expressed gratitude for the nation’s love and support during his first year as monarch. The chosen photograph, taken by Cecil Beaton in 1968, shows Queen Elizabeth II in her Garter robes, wearing the Grand Duchess Vladimir’s Tiara. Various tributes and events are planned to mark the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death, including gun salutes and memorial prayers. Prince Harry also paid his tribute during the WellChild Awards ceremony.
The late Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral Castle on 8 September last year, just months after celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne.
In his message, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledged the late Queen’s extraordinary life of duty and dedication, emphasizing her deep devotion to the nations of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. He also shared his personal memories of meeting her and being struck by her wisdom, warmth, grace, and sharp wit.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer highlighted the special bond Queen Elizabeth II had with the people, demonstrated by the queues to see her lying in state. He encouraged embracing the spirit of public service as a guide to a better future.
To mark the anniversary of King Charles’s accession to the throne, gun salutes will be fired, and bells will be rung at Westminster Abbey. Prince Harry also paid tribute to the late Queen in a speech at the WellChild Awards ceremony.
