Omalpe Sobhitha Thera says Karuna Amman should be arrested immediately if the country’s President and Prime Minister have any self-respect. “If not at least he should be taken into custody by the military,” he told Lankasara.
According to the Thera despite those who ended the war are now governing the country, people like Karuna are able to make these brazen remarks because he is being protected by the political authorities.
“The Military is a group who are legally committed to ensuring the national security of a country. If you take this statement seriously a ruler will not allow a person who claimed to have killed military men to be free even for a moment. He would be arrested. If a person made such a brazen statement in any other country he would be in prison by now” the Thera said.
“What is the Attorney General doing? Uwathenne Thera was sent to prison for life for keeping an illegal weapon. People are often imprisoned for smaller crimes. But what has AG done against a man who is openly saying he killed 5000 Army soldiers in public? What more evidence is needed? He itself is admitting he killed them. 5000 murders. This is the best evidence” he added.
“The former Defence Secretary is the President today. The former President is the Prime Minister. A person who was in the frontlines is the Secretary of Defence now. He is telling these leaders that he killed 5000 of your people”
“We won the war after sacrificing 26 000 lives of soldiers. If anyone can freely make a comment like this in a country won in that manner and remain free its a shock. In the past, this man was made the Vice President of the SLFP. He was made a Minister. He clearly knows now that the rulers are fools. So he is acting brave”
“These foolish rulers must come forward and arrest this man. Or the Army must intervene. However, we will file a complaint at the Police Headquarters tomorrow about this” the Thera said.
