Due to heavy rainfall causing a rise in the water level of the Kantale Lake, one of the 10 floodgates of the lake was opened today (16), with four gates being opened by one inch each.
The Kantale Irrigation Engineer, A. S. Chinthaka S. Suraweera, reported that the maximum water capacity of the lake is 114,000 acre-feet. At the time of opening the sluice gates, the water flow was at 109,450 acre-feet, and the water level in the lake was rapidly increasing.

The Kantale Divisional Secretary, N.M. Upeksha Kumari, issued a statement advising residents living in the lower part of the lake and farmers in lower fields to be aware of the situation due to the opening of the sluice gates.
