Japan resumes 11 suspended projects in Sri Lanka

All currently suspended development projects, which were being implemented based on Japanese government loans and grants, will resume work in the next two to three weeks, The Japanese government officially informed today (24).

Mr. Mizukoshi Hideaki, Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, and Mr. Ide Yuri, Senior Representative of Japan International Cooperation Institute (JICA) in Sri Lanka announced this while attending the special press conference held today (24) afternoon at the Ministry of Finance.

The official document in that regard was issued with the chairman of JAICA and it was officially handed over to the Ministry Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena on behalf of the government.

Addressing the occasion, the Japanese ambassador Hideaki mentioned that this would give Sri Lanka the strength to drive a fast economic development journey.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Mahinda Siriwardena, said that the fact that Sri Lanka has finalized debt restructuring with Japan, after two and a half years of stopping repayment of loans and interest. That improvement cleared the way to resume work in this way marks a milestone in the country’s development.

Expansion of the Bandaranaike International Airport, improvement of drinking water facilities in very difficult provinces, provision of water, etc., 11 pending projects have been given scope to be implemented under this in the future.

He further said that it is a great victory to be able to restart the development expansion which has been stopped very soon.

Ajith Abeysekara, Director General, Foreign Resources Department, Ministry of Finance, and several representatives from both sides participated in this bilateral special press conference held by the Ministry of Finance.
