Bambalapitiya Police have arrested six individuals, including a Colombo District candidate from the Jana Aragala Alliance, on charges of robbing a doctor of over Rs. 1 million in cash. According to police, the suspects forced the doctor to undress and threatened to release compromising footage of him on social media.
Among those detained are the candidate, her husband, and her son-in-law. A Colombo Magistrate, Pasan Amarasena, ordered the suspects to remain in custody until November 12 and instructed that an identification parade be conducted.
The incident reportedly occurred on November 8, when the doctor visited a government apartment building in Bambalapitiya for a massage, after discovering the location via social media. While he prepared for the procedure, three suspects emerged from an adjacent room, armed with a knife, and threatened to record and release a video of him. The suspects allegedly demanded a substantial sum, coercing the doctor to transfer Rs. 1 million online and hand over Rs. 15,000 in cash.
Police investigations revealed that the account receiving the Rs. 1 million transfer was registered to the People’s Struggle Alliance candidate residing in Mount Lavinia. The suspects reportedly held the doctor at the apartment for nearly an hour before he was able to leave. Later that evening, the doctor filed a complaint with the police, accompanied by his lawyer.
Following the complaint, officers visited the apartment and began an investigation. They discovered that the apartment had been rented out for Rs. 3,500 per day through an online advertisement. Using this lead, the police tracked down the suspects, who were then taken into custody and presented before the court.
The investigation is ongoing under the direction of Bambalapitiya Police OIC, Chief Inspector K.A. Sampath Padmalal.
