The hunger strike launched by a group of Jaffna University students has entered its fourth day. The students continue to remain on the premises while continuing their agitation.

A group of students of the Jaffna University have launched the hunger strikje in front of the Parameswaran Kovil of the University. They are calling for the punishments handed to several students for being involved in a clash between two groups of second and third year students last year to be relaxed. According to the students the punishments handed are unjust and disproportionate to the wrong committed.

Three of the six students involved in the incident have had their studentships suspended for one year, while others have had their studentships suspended for six months.

The students say the university administration has prepared a 130-page report on the incident and punished them according to its recommendations, but have not provided students with an opportunity to appeal.

Students on a fast-unto-death at Jaffna University say the sentence should be commuted immediately.

A group of Kopai police officers in Jaffna have gone there and started discussions to stop the fast being carried out by the students.
