The Attorney General, in a submission to the Court of Appeal today (04), disclosed that intelligence agencies have obtained information about a conspiracy to assassinate the former Director of the CID, Shani Abeysekera. According to the intelligence reports, there is a plot to orchestrate a car accident on the highway to eliminate Abeysekera.
This information was presented during a hearing of a writ petition filed by Shani Abeysekera, wherein he sought an order for sufficient security measures due to perceived life threats. The petition was called before the bench of Justice Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne and Vikum Kaluarachchi, President of the Court of Appeal.
During the proceedings, President’s Advocate Upul Jayasuriya, representing Shani Abeysekera, expressed dissatisfaction with the security measures currently in place for his client. He highlighted that only an old motorcycle and three police officers were assigned for protection, emphasizing that the security provided was insufficient.
The Court of Appeal ordered that an appropriate order be issued regarding the petition and scheduled a further hearing for December 14.
