IGP Informs Maithripala Sirisena to Give Statement About Easter Sunday Attacks with 48 Hours

IGP Deshbandu Tennakoon has confirmed that he instructed Former President Maithripala Sirisena to provide a statement to the CID regarding the his recent statement claiming knowledge of the mastermind behind the Easter attack. The former President is expected to provide his statement to the CID within 48 hours of notification.

Following the media reports on the former President’s statement, Public Security Minister Tiran Alas ordered an immediate investigation, as disclosed by the IGP. He emphasized that any threat to the former President’s safety, based on his statement, would prompt formal measures to ensure his security, in consultation with the relevant minister.

The IGP clarified that the former President cannot be arrested solely based on his statement, highlighting the necessity for thorough investigations before any such action. He asserted that arrests would only occur if deemed necessary at the conclusion of the investigations.

Furthermore, Tennakoon underscored the legal obligation for individuals with information about a crime to cooperate with police investigations by providing statements. He reassured that the CID is actively investigating the Easter attack, and the former President will inform both the court and the attorney general about his statement, taking appropriate measures accordingly.
