The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning that heavy rain is expected across many parts of Sri Lanka. Rainfall exceeding 100mm is likely in several areas due to a low-pressure system in the southwest Bay of Bengal, which is intensifying into a depression.
According to the forecast:
- Very Heavy Rain (Above 150mm): Expected in the Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa district.
- Heavy Rain (Above 100mm): Likely in other parts of the island.
- Strong Winds: Winds up to 50 km/h are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Western, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Hambantota and Matale districts.
The public is advised to take precautions against strong winds, lightning, and possible flash floods in low-lying areas. Landslide warnings have also been issued for several districts including Badulla, Kandy, and Ratnapura.
