An intense altercation reportedly unfolded in the cricket training section yesterday (23) evening, marking a heated dispute following a coaches’ meeting at the Khettarama Stadium. The conflict arose between assistant coach Naveed Nawaz and fielding coach Anton, escalating with the involvement of head coach Chris Silverwood and head of advanced talent Tim McCaxkill.
According to reports, the dispute originated during a coaches’ meeting. The argument initially centered around cricket strategies but expanded into a broader conflict involving local and foreign coaches. The intervention of head coach Chris Silverwood and Tim McCaxkill reportedly intensified the situation.
Amidst the escalating tension, counselor Mahela Jayawardena reportedly entered the fray, expressing his concern that the entire Khettarama Stadium was being adversely affected by the conflict.
The root cause of the dispute is said to be a comment by bowling coach Anton during the meeting, attributing the team’s poor batting performance to the final defeat in the World Cup and placing responsibility on Naveed Nawaz. The irony is noted in the fact that the bowling coach, whose team gave away the highest number of catches in the World Cup, is pointing fingers at the batting coach.
The incident comes in the aftermath of Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign, where they lost seven out of nine matches. While many countries typically undergo significant changes in their coaching staff after a World Cup tournament, Sri Lanka’s coaching consultants have reportedly remained in their positions despite the team’s performance.
