A report from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has revealed that in the year 2022, 2,340 inmates in the country’s prisons were graduates.
Among these incarcerated graduates, 41 are women, and 2,299 are men, marking the highest number of graduates imprisoned in the last three years.
The report further highlights that 121 individuals with educational qualifications higher than a degree were also incarcerated in the past year. Additionally, among the inmates, 8,420 had passed the General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) Advanced Level, while 7,168 had passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level. The lowest number of inmates were those who had not attended school, totaling 836. In total, out of the 30,331 inmates imprisoned during the past year, 17,928 were found to have qualifications beyond the basic level of education.
