The government has announced that investigations into seven major crimes, excluding the high-profile murder cases of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga, rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, and cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda, are nearing completion. Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha Herath confirmed that these investigations could be finalized swiftly, allowing for immediate legal proceedings.
Speaking at a press briefing, Herath provided updates on the case of Eknaligoda, who disappeared in 2010 under suspicious circumstances. He noted that there was no need to commence a new investigation, as the incident has already been investigated.
The murders of Lasantha Wickramatunga, a renowned journalist, and Wasim Thajudeen, a prominent rugby player, are also classified as criminal cases that remain under investigation, he added.
He emphasized that, in addition to these seven cases, the government is committed to investigating all types of economic and violent crimes, including murder, and ensuring that justice is served.
As the legal processes for these high-profile cases move forward, the government has assured the public that accountability and transparency remain priorities in the pursuit of justice.
