The Government of Sri Lanka has agreed to effectively consider the Opposition’s request for increased representation in Parliamentary Committees. This decision was discussed during a special Party Leaders’ Meeting held today in Parliament.
The meeting, chaired by Hon. Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, was attended by key political figures, including Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. During the discussions, the Chief Opposition Whip reiterated the demand for greater Opposition representation in committees.
Expressing appreciation for the Hon. Speaker’s earlier announcement on February 19, the Leader of the House formally communicated the Government’s position in writing. The letter was read aloud at the meeting, affirming that the Government would provide its stance on the request after careful review.
The Government’s willingness to consider this request marks a significant development in Parliamentary proceedings, as Opposition members seek a stronger role in legislative decision-making.
