The Convener of the National Organizations Collective, Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera says that the government’s attempt to hastily add amendments to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution is suspicious.

“We are strongly opposed to amendments of the 19A. Instead a new constitution can provide us with the necessary solutions to all these problems” he said.

“It is said that it will take two years to bring this new constitution. After sitting and waiting for another two years, I believe that this two-thirds obtained will reduce to one-third. Then they can say that we do not have two thirds now, so we can not do these things” he added.

“It takes only ten months to have a baby. Does it take two years to draft a constitution? What is the urgency of changing 19A? The conflict between the then President and the Prime Minister is no more. Unless it is to fulfill someone’s selfish aspirations there is no need to remove or add sections to 19A, ”he further said.
