Former Western Provincial Councillor Nimal R. Peiris was released on bail by the Kaduwela Magistrate today (19) after he was arrested and presented to courts over a postage stamp fraud worth close to Rs. 113,000 under the free postal service provisions given for the post of Provincial Councilor. Peiris is currently a coordinating secretary of Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
The former provincial councilor had mailed 7,564 letters under the provision. The Postal Department had lodged a complaint with the Thalangama Police which resulted in Peiris’s arrest on Saturday (18). Investigations revealed that 3,000 of the letters were invitations to a meeting of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. The police stated that the postal printer given to him by the Provincial Council had been broken and fraudulently used for mail since 2018 without returning it.
