Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali yesterday (25) ordered the remand of former State Minister S. Viyalendran until April 1, following his arrest by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
The former State Minister was summoned, and a statement was recorded regarding his alleged involvement in aiding a bribery incident. Thereafter, he was arrested by CIABOC officials and produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
The Magistrate also directed the Bribery Commission to update the court on the progress of the investigation on the next hearing date.
Last year, two individuals, including Viyalendran’s private secretary, were arrested and remanded by the Bribery Commission for soliciting a bribe of Rs. 1.5 million from a businessman in the Polonnaruwa area in exchange for issuing a sand mining permit. They were later released on bail by the court.
