The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has issued an order for the release of former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachitra Senanayake on bail. Senanayake, who was facing charges related to match-fixing, has been granted bail with strict travel restrictions.
The Magistrate’s decision to grant bail was made on the grounds that there was no evidence suggesting that the suspect had influenced witnesses during the investigation period.
Sachitra Senanayake had been taken into custody by the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Sports Offenses on match-fixing charges and was subsequently remanded after appearing before Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alvis.
The charges against Senanayake stem from his alleged involvement in match-fixing during the Lanka Premier League held in Hambantota in 2021. It is reported that he had approached two players from Dubai who were representing Colombo Kings and Dambulla Vikings, proposing match-fixing in exchange for monetary gain.
Senanayake, accompanied by legal counsel, voluntarily appeared before the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Sports Offenses, where he was subsequently arrested and presented before the court.
