Former Kalutara District MP and Minister Kumara Welgama has died at the age of 74 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.
Welgama was born into a business family in Matugama, Kalutara, and entered parliament in 1994. He held various government positions, including Transport Minister and Minister of Industrial Development. His father, S.A. Welgama, was a well-known businessman involved in transportation, logistics, and plantations.
Kumara Welgama had two brothers: Nimal Welgama, former SLT chairman and managing director of Upali Group, and Nalin Welgama, chairman of Ideal Group.
In 2020, he founded the New Lanka Freedom Party and ran for elections with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. A few years ago, he underwent kidney surgery and received ongoing treatment while serving as a member of Parliament.
