Female Police Sergeant Killed in Truck Collision

A female police officer met was fatally crushed by a truck at the Malabada junction while crossing the road from Matugama towards Kalutara today (20) afternoon.

The victim, identified as Sergeant Damayanthi Weerasuriya, was attached to the Kalutara Police Superintendent’s Office and resided in the Puhambugoda area of Dodangoda.

According to Matugama police reports, Sergeant Weerasuriya had disembarked from a bus after completing her duties when the unfortunate incident occurred. Despite immediate medical attention and efforts to rush her to the Kalutara Nagoda Teaching Hospital, Sergeant Weerasuriya passed away due to her injuries en route.

In response to the incident, the truck driver involved was promptly apprehended by authorities and is slated to appear before the Matugama Magistrate to face legal proceedings.

As investigations into the incident continue, the body of Sergeant Damayanthi Weerasuriya has been transferred to the Kalutara Teaching Hospital for post-mortem examination.
