The Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), led by former Minister Douglas Devananda, has become the first Tamil political party to field two Buddhist monks for a general election in Sri Lanka.
In the upcoming election, the EPDP has nominated Rev. Kiriibbanare Vijitha Thero and Rev. Udawalawe Jinasiri Thero as candidates on their Colombo district list. This marks the first time the EPDP is contesting in the Colombo district.
“I decided to run in the general election under the EPDP, led by Mr. Douglas Devananda, to promote national reconciliation. Our goal is to create unity among all Sri Lankans, not to seek positions,” said Rev. Vijitha Thero after submitting his nomination.
The EPDP’s candidate list for the Colombo district includes representatives from the Tamil, Muslim, and Sinhalese communities.
