Egyptian Ambassador Exchanges Views with CDS & Army Commander

The Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt for Sri Lanka, HE Hussein El Saharty arrived at the Army Headquarters yesterday (23) in order to pay courtesies to the Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), General Shavendra Silva.

Upon his arrival at the Army Headquarters, Master General Ordnance, Major General HiroshaWanigasekara received him at the entrance and ushered him to the Commander’s office. Following a warm reception, the Sri Lankan Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva held cordial discussions with the Egyptian Ambassador on matters of bilateral importance and mutual relevance.

The visiting Ambassador expressed his willingness to strengthen defence-related ties between the two countries, and in response, the Sri Lankan military chief recalled historical ties that both countries have had for centuries. Further improvement of defence exchange including military training programmes between the two countries was also taken up for discussion during the exchange of views. Towards the end of the interaction, General Shavendra Silva awarded a memento to the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr Hussein El Saharty and wished him good luck with his future endeavours.

Prior to the envoy’s departure, HE Hussein El Saharty inquired into the control of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka from General Shavendra Silva who is also the Head of the NOCPCO. He also placed a complimentary remark in the Visitors’ Book at the Commander’s office before he left the Army Headquarters. The bilateral meeting was held in keeping with the healthcare procedures to contain the spread of COVID-19.
